HOW TO READ AND SEND MAIL BY SSH (secure socket)

FIRST TIME:

1. Copy PUTTY.EXE to the desktop or a portable storage device. If you don't have it click here to download.
2. Start Putty. There is nothing to install, it can run from a cd or keychain drive.
3. Click the "SSH" button
4. Type  POP3.1-us.com in the hostname window. leave on port 22
5. Type MAIL SERVER in the saved sessions window.
6. Click the Save button.

AFTER INSTALLATION AND SETUP:

1. Double-click POP3.1-us.com.
2. Enter your username at the prompt.
3. Enter your password at the next prompt. (you will not see anything when you type.)
4. at the % sign prompt type "pine" (without the quote marks)
5. this starts the mail reading program,
   there will be a menu at the bottom of the screen
   the up and down arrow keys can highlight a line
6. after you are finished using pine, type "q" to Quit
7. type "exit" to leave the telnet connection

The PINE program will not leave a copy of your mail on the computer you are using. You must use the d (delete) command to get rid of unwanted mail. When you press Q to quit, pine will offer to expunge the messages you have marked. When you get back to your home machine the mail that you did not delete will download as usual, even though you already read it with pine.

COMMON PINE COMMANDS:

DURING FILE MENU SELECTION
do not type the parentheses

(Up and Down arrows)
highlight a file or message

(Enter Key)
select file or message

(d)
delete marks message with a D for deletion

(u)
undelete removes deletion mark

(i)

help

(space bar)

(-) minus sign

(q)
quit pine

(c)
compose create new message

(r)
reply to author

The (r) and (c) Commands open an editing window
DURING TEXT EDITING:
a ^ means hold down the (Ctrl) key while typing the letter that follows.

postpone (you can come back and finish later)

send message

(^g)
help

remember to press (q) to quit when you are done
